Bethany Barnes is a reporter on the investigations team at the Tampa Bay Times.

She came to the Times from The Oregonian, where her coverage of Portland Public Schools prompted the Education Writers Association to name Barnes the nation’s best education beat reporter in 2018.

Barnes got her start in Las Vegas, working first for the Las Vegas Sun and then the Las Vegas Review-Journal. She covered an array of beats during her three years in Nevada and pulled off multiple investigations. The Nevada Press Association awarded her its highest honor, Outstanding Journalist.

Barnes is passionate about local journalism and is one of five journalists who scour front pages across the country daily to put together Local Matters, a weekly newsletter of the nation’s best local investigative reporting.

Barnes has a bachelor’s degree in creative nonfiction and a master’s in journalism from the University of Arizona. She found her love of journalism through the student paper, the Daily Wildcat.
